St. Andrews, Scotland
The Home of Golf. The Old Course is where it all started. Walking the same fairways as Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods is a spiritual experience for any golfer. Plus Scotland's whisky, pubs, and countryside are world-class.

Where you'll play
The Old Course at St Andrews
Ballot system — apply 2 days before, results at 4pm. Or book a guaranteed tee time through Old Course Experience package (£££). Walking only, caddie essential. Sunday is closed (rest day tradition). The Swilcan Bridge on #18 is the most famous photo in golf.
The New Course (St Andrews Links)
Don't let the name fool you — it opened in 1895. Excellent links golf without the Old Course lottery. Often available same-day.
Kingsbarns Golf Links
15 min from St Andrews. Clifftop links with North Sea views on nearly every hole. Many say it's the best 'modern links' course in Scotland.
Carnoustie Golf Links (Championship)
30 min from St Andrews. 'Car-nasty' is the hardest Open Championship venue. Barry Burn on #18 has decided Opens. For low handicappers.

Insider tips
Enter the Old Course ballot early — results come at 4pm, 2 days before. Have a backup plan.
If you miss the ballot, show up as a single at dawn for a walk-on — it works more than you'd think
A caddie on the Old Course is non-negotiable. They know every hidden bunker and slope.
Play Kingsbarns the day before the Old Course — it's spectacular and gets you links-ready
Bring rain gear and layers for EVERY round. Scottish weather changes every 30 minutes.
